Были приняты в результате начавшейся в 1887 кампании за принятие законодательства о чистых продуктах питания. Наиболее значительный из них - Закон о контроле качества мяса [Meat Inspection Act] - был принят Конгрессом в 1907 после скандала с т.н. "забальзамированным мясом" [embalmed beef] во время Испано-американской войны [Spanish-American War]. Закон о чистых продуктах питания и лекарствах 1906 года [Pure Food and Drug Act] дал Министерству сельского хозяйства [Department of Agriculture, U.S.] право контроля за качеством производимого мяса и других продуктов питания
